Essay Abstract

Gorden, Dustin and Timothy Lutz.

Great Expectations and Great Adaptation; the Classic Novel’s Notions of Identity as they Pertain to the Concept of Adaptation.

The essay first explores how Dickens’ Great Expectations reinterprets his earlier work

Oliver Twist. Several examples of character interaction are drawn on to support the

claim that the corruptible Pip is a realistic answer to the unrealistic naivety of Oliver.

Through this, Pip’s search for identity is clearly defined as the quest to becoming a

“Gentle-man” as opposed to a Gentleman. The essay goes on to show how the

identity themes of Great Expectations have been adapted in the realms of film and

Television since the silent era.
